The South Carolina Coalition for Obesity Prevention Efforts (SCCOPE) is a statewide partnership comprised of individuals representing community-based organizations, health care systems, voluntary and professional organizations, academic institutions, state agencies, policy makers, and the media. The mission of SCCOPE is to foster statewide coordinated, collaborative, and sustainable efforts leading to the increased capacity for promoting healthy weight, controlling obesity, and decreasing the burden of obesity-related chronic disease in South Carolina. Because of the growing body of evidence regarding the link between breastfeeding and the prevention of obesity, one of SCCOPE's goals is to increase the percentage of South Carolina mothers who breastfeed for at least six months.
The SCCOPE website is diverse and has value for professionals and for the general public. The website features community links to the SC Breastfeeding Coalition and the SC Breastfeeding Action Committee and provides links to other breastfeeding resources, also.
The SCCOPE website has a link to the state obesity plan, which contains current breastfeeding statistics along with breastfeeding promotion and support strategies for the state. The website also has links for the SCCOPE quarterly newsletter, grant opportunities, updates, and resources. Additionally, the site features an interactive calendar where organization's can add meetings and events to the SCCOPE calendar.
